Custom Wine Cellars in San Francisco and the Bay Area: Design, Kits and Materials

Prestige Wine Cellars designs custom wine cellars and wine walls for homes across the Bay Area, and supplies engineered kits and materials for your California-licensed contractor to build. Two things set this market apart: the climate can change dramatically within a short drive, and earthquakes make anchoring part of the design.

We don’t build or install in California. We design and supply, and a contractor licensed in California builds the room. Homeowners from Pacific Heights and Piedmont to Hillsborough, Atherton and Los Altos Hills can start the same way.

What Makes a Bay Area Wine Cellar Different

A wine cellar in Concord and one in the Sunset District don’t face the same conditions.

Your microclimate sets the load

Average July highs run about 66°F in San Francisco, 79°F in Palo Alto and 88°F in Concord. Size the cooling for your address and not for the region.

Earthquakes change the racking

USGS puts the chance of a magnitude 6.7 or larger Bay Area earthquake before 2043 at 72%. Ask your contractor or engineer how tall racking and glass will be anchored and what your city requires.

Older homes need closer inspection

Many older Bay Area homes sit on crawlspaces with cripple walls, and new homes in the region are mostly built on slabs. Few have a ready-made basement, so your contractor should check what’s beneath the room.

California’s energy code may apply

Title 24 covers additions and alterations, and the 2025 version applies to permits from January 1, 2026. Ask your contractor whether your project triggers it.

Bay Area Wine Cellar Questions, Answered

Do you build wine cellars in San Francisco?

We don’t build or install in California. We provide the design, kits and materials, and a contractor licensed in California builds the room. Construction contracts are between you and your contractor.

Does San Francisco’s cool climate mean I don’t need cooling?

In most cases you still do. Even with mild summers, your house stays warmer than 55°F, and a steady temperature is what protects wine.

How should a wine cellar be built for earthquakes?

Racking and glass need to be anchored for the conditions, and requirements vary by city. Have your contractor or a structural engineer review the design for your home.

Does a Bay Area wine cellar need a permit?

It depends on the scope and your city. Structural, electrical and mechanical work commonly requires one, so check with your contractor and building department.

Can you ship a wine cellar kit to California?

Yes. Our Edition kits deliver anywhere in the world, and your own contractor can install them.

How much does a kit or design cost?

Edition plans start at $5,000. Custom design is a flat fee of $5,000 to $10,000, set by project size. Construction cost depends on your contractor and your space.
